May Morning Breakfasts
May morning is a tradition dating back 500 years in the city of Oxford. On the 1st May crowds gather on the Magdalen Bridge to hear the choir of Magdalen College sing a hymn in Latin to herald in the arrival of spring. This begins at 6am with 18,500 people gathering in the city for the festivities which include morris dancing and general merriment.
For a number of years, Wesley Memorial Church has been making the most of the May morning festivities to serve our community. Free bacon and vegetarian sausage butties are given away outside the church, with toast, tea, coffee and juice also available. This year we served 200 free breakfasts in just over an hour as hungry revellers made their way past the church to the rest of their day.
It is such a lovely atmosphere and many of our visitors were hugely grateful for a free breakfast and a place to relax with their friends. We also had an opportunity to share the work of the church through a rolling presentation on our screen and through conversations with people. It requires a rather early start and we're grateful to our wonderful team of volunteers!
