Pioneering

Across the Methodist Church and this District, God is always doing something new.

Pioneering ministry is about joining in with that newness ; stepping beyond the familiar, listening deeply to our communities, and discovering fresh ways to share God’s love with people who might never walk through the doors of a traditional church.

At its heart, pioneering is simply this: going where people are, building relationships, and creating spaces where faith can grow naturally and authentically.

You might draw some inspiration from Exploring Faith in Nature, based in Faringdon, Oxfordshire ( pictured )
They've just celebrated their 5th birthday and you can watch the video here.

What is pioneering ministry?

Methodism has always had a pioneering spirit. From John Wesley preaching in fields and marketplaces to class meetings in homes and workplaces, our story begins with people willing to try something different so that more people could encounter God’s grace.

Today, that same spirit continues.

Pioneering ministry might look like:

Gathering a community café or toddler group

Starting a new worshipping community in a school, pub, or park

Walking alongside people on a housing estate; this has been done to great effect in Overstone, Northants with Mel from the Mission Team.

Creating online spaces for prayer and connection

Working creatively with artists, young people, or those on the margins – Rev'd Kim Shorley has made great strides along some of these themes!

SImply listening and responding to the needs of a neighbourhood

It’s less about buildings and programmes, and more about presence, relationships, and faith taking shape in everyday life.

Could you be part of this?

You don’t need to be an expert or have all the answers. Pioneering begins with openness: a willingness to listen, to care, and to try something new.

Perhaps you have an idea on your heart.
Perhaps you see a need in your community.
Perhaps you simply feel a nudge that there must be another way to reach out.

We would love to explore that with you.

Whether you’re curious, discerning a call, or already involved in something new, we’re here to support and encourage you. Together, we can pray, dream, and discover what God might be calling us to next.
